Mastering the Streets: Advanced Skateboarding Tricks for Your Staycation
A staycation offers the perfect block of uninterrupted time to progress your skateboarding skills. Without the distractions of travel, you can transform your local park, driveway, or empty parking lot into a personal training ground. Moving past intermediate kickflips and boardslides requires deep focus, precise foot placement, and muscle memory. Dedicating a few days of your staycation to advanced tricks will radically elevate your style and control. The Technical Precision of the Tre Flip
The 360 flip, universally known as the tre flip, remains the benchmark trick for advanced street skaters. It combines a full 360-degree board rotation with a complete kickflip. The secret to mastering the tre flip lies almost entirely in the back foot scoop rather than the front foot flick. Position your back foot in the pocket of the tail with your toes hanging slightly off the edge. Your front foot should sit at a forty-five-degree angle near the middle of the board.
When you pop, scoop your back foot aggressively backward toward your heel. This motion generates the full 360-degree spin. Simultaneously, use your front foot to guide a subtle, effortless flick off the side of the nose. Keep your shoulders completely parallel to the board to avoid over-rotating your body. Catch the board with your front foot first to stop the rotation, then stomp the back foot down for a clean landing. Elevating Control with Backside Overcrooks
Grinds enter the advanced realm when you lock into positions that require counter-intuitive balance. The backside overcrooked grind is a prime example of this transition. Unlike a standard crooked grind where the board hangs toward the side you approached from, an overcrook forces the tail of the board to swing completely over the rail or ledge. This requires immense core stability and a fearless approach angle.
Approach the ledge at a slight angle with plenty of speed. Pop high enough to clear the obstacle, and guide your front truck onto the rail. As you lock the front truck down, intentionally press your weight forward and push the tail of your board over the far side of the rail. Your body must lean slightly back to counteract the weight of the board hanging over the edge. Lock your front wheel tight against the side of the ledge to lock in the grind, and look toward the end of the obstacle to guide your exit. The Illusion of the Hardflip
Few tricks look as visually striking or confusing as the hardflip. It is a combination of a frontside pop shove-it and a kickflip, resulting in a board that flips vertically through the skater’s legs. The physics of this trick require you to jump high and completely commit to letting the board rotate underneath your body. Proper foot placement involves putting your front foot well behind the front bolts, angled sharply outward.
Pop the tail straight down while pushing it slightly forward to initiate the frontside rotation. As the board rises, use your front foot to flick upward and inward, dragging the board into a vertical flip. You must lift your front leg high out of the way to allow the board to pass safely beneath you. Watch the grip tape closely as it rotates back into view. Catch the board at its highest point with both feet before gravity brings you back to the concrete. Transition Excellence with the Blunt to Fakie
If you have access to a mini-ramp or quarterpipe during your staycation, the blunt to fakie is the ultimate transition trick to conquer. This maneuver involves riding up the transition, popping the back wheels completely over the coping, and balancing on the tail of the board against the deck of the ramp. It requires a dangerous blend of commitment and precise weight distribution to pull back into the ramp backward.
Aproach the coping with moderate speed. Lift your front wheels over the coping and jam your tail down onto the deck, locking the back wheels against the metal pipe. Keep your weight centered directly over the ramp, not the deck. To exit, press down slightly on the tail to lift the back wheels off the coping while using your front foot to guide the board back into the transition. Guide the wheels cleanly over the coping to ride away smoothly in a fakie stance. Solidifying Advanced Muscle Memory
Advancing your skateboarding skills requires patience, resilience, and a willingness to slam. Utilizing a staycation means you can film your sessions, analyze your footwork in slow motion, and make micro-adjustments between attempts. Breaking down complex maneuvers into individual components allows you to diagnose precisely where a trick is failing.
